This is the part of our service where we come to the word of God. We have sung of the greatness of God, we have confessed our sins, we have found assurance in Jesus Christ, who has paid it all that we might be white ass snow. And now we come to the part where his words sets us apart and sanctifies us. So, with that in mind, let us pray this morning. Most gracious God, we come to you, we have confessed our sins and we ask your forgiveness and we know and revel in the truth that we have found acceptance in you because of what Christ has done in our place. This morning, God, if there is anyone here that does not know that joy, that does not know that acceptance, I pray right now, as your word goes forth, that you would convict, that you would open eyes, that you would open hearts. This morning. For those of us that know you, Lord, we fail. And so, Lord, in of an in that forgiveness, fill us with your spirit, let us know the beauty of the forgiveness that we have in you and give us power by your spirit to live the life you have called us to live. Or this morning we open up your word and we want to hear from you this morning. We want to hear what you have to speak to us this morning. So God, speak, Spirit, move, bind, feel, convict, encourage, whatever you need to do with us this morning. We are yours. Oh God, do with us as you will. We pray this in the strong and glorious name of Jesus. Amen. Beyond this day, no thinking person could fail to see what would happen. The day that it is that this quote is referring to is March thirteenth and fourteenth nineteen forty three, almost four years before that, Adolf Hitler in the Third Reich had invaded Poland, setting off World War Two, and almost immediately the Polish town of Krack owl was taken. Over the next couple of years, the Jews that remained were moved into a ghetto surrounded by stone walls and barbed wire, made to live in conditions no human being should ever have to live in, made to work in some of the local factories that were supporting the war effort. One such factory was an enamelware factory outside of the ghetto, owned by a man named Oscar Schindler. Oscar Schindler was a Nazi. He was not a Nazi, probably because of ideological conviction. He was a Nazi more because he saw an opportunity to get rich, an opportunity for wealth, and from the time he arrived in crack owl in nineteen thirty nine, he did every think he could to line his pockets and lift up his status. Where that's buying this enamel ware factory, whether it is blackmail, whether it is black market dealings, whether it's bribes, whatever he could do to make himself known, he was the least likeliest of heroes, at least until March thirteen and fourteen, one thousand nine hundred and forty three, when he saw and witnessed the liquidation of the crackal ghetto. The liquidations an interesting word to use for that. When I think of liquidation, I think of like a furniture store that needs to get rid of all of its inventory so they can sell the building and go out of business. And yet that's what the Nazis thought of the Jews. They were just things, they were just inventory, and they took the ones who could still work pretty well, they sent them to the Labor counps, with the vast majority who couldn't or headed to the gas chambers of Auschwitz. But what Oscar Schindler saw on that day was...

...not simply trucks being loaded. What he saw in that moment, in that process, was over two thousand Jews, men, women, children, brutally murdered, brutally slain for the simple fact act that they were alive, simply simply for their ethnicity. See, Oscar Schindler was part of evil. He was perpetuating evil. He was. He was perpetrating evil, he was. He was forwarding an evil agenda and even at that point he may not have even understood how evil the agenda was that he was perpetuating. But in that moment the scales were taken off of these eyes and he was before his eyes was evil that he could no longer ignore and he decided in that moment to take a different path. He's quoted as saying I was now resolved to do everything in my power to defeat the system. That's exactly what he did. He would take his enamel ware factory, he would change it into an ammunitions factory, so that all of the workers were essential to the war effort, even though they weren't making bullets that actually worked. And through all of his influence, all of his wealth, all of his influence through the black market, in black mail and all of those other things. He actually convinced the Nazis to move that Enamel where, a factory that was now an ammunitions factory away from crack, out into Czechoslovakia, where he was from. To protect his workers, he had to make a list of people to go make the journey. This is what is commonly referred to as Schendler's list, or how many of the Jews refer to it as Schindler's Ark? When the war was over, one hundred Jews had been saved from death because of what Oscar Schendler did. It is estimated that eight thousand to Tenzero people are alive today. They have families, they have lives, they have legacy because of Oscar Schindler because in a moment he changed directions. This morning we are returning to our occasional series on the book of Psalms. We've entitled this the Psalms we are singing. We've dedicated this year to learning some psalms to sing. We are commanded, when we come together, to Sing Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. We do very well with the last two, but we lack a little bit on the first one, and so we've learned some psalms that year we will continue to learn some palms. We learned Psalm one hundred and fifty, which we sang this morning. By God's grace, next week we will learn a new psalm based on Psalm one hundred and thirty, called I will wait for you. If that's on your playlist, you can listen to it this week. In preparation this morning we want to focus on a song we were learning before Easter called God be merciful to me, a taken from the Scottish palter based on Psalm fifty one. And as you need Psalm fifty one, there is one word it seems to pop out, it comes to my mind. If I were to ask you what are some of the most important words in the Christian vernacular, you might say things like mercy and grace. You might say faith, Hope, Love, humility, salvation, Gospel. All of those are accurate. This morning we are going to speak of another word, or this just important of those words, a word that is vital to the Christian life, that is vital to the Christian faith, that is vital...

...to being a Christian. It intersects with all of those words, and the word we are going to look at this morning, unfortunately, is one that has fallen out of favor in some places, maybe even here. That word is repentance. We just celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ. When he came out of the tomb, stomping on the head of the devil, stomping on the head of hell, stomping on the head of death and sin, he would spend the next forty days with his disciples. He would ascend into heaven in ten days later, they would be in the upper room during the celebration of Pentecost, and the continuation of the Earth shattering events of the coming of the Kingdom of God would continue, as the Holy Spirit would fall upon them. The Holy Spirit would not just be with them, but the Holy Spirit would be in them, and they would begin to speak in languages they did not understand. Regardless of how you might interpret what those tongues were, we can all agree that in that moment there was a miracle of speaking going on and all those that heard them speak heard them in their native languages. Again, regardless of how you might interpret that we see here a miracle of hearing, as people hear the Gospel presented to them personally in their language. And then Peter stands up and preaches, preaches the first post Resurrection Holy Spirit Field, Gospel Sermon and Gospel Proclamation. And when he's done, when he's done, in acts chapter two, it says that those who are hearing him were cut to the heart and they ask a question, brothers, what shall we do? And the response Peter gives is this. The first word he says is repent. Repent and be baptized in the name of Christ, Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. And he goes on to say, Peter Goes on to say this is not a promise just for the apostles. This is not just a promise for you. This is not just a promise for first century gentiles. This is a promise for all people of all nations of all time, whom God will draw to himself. If they will repent and believe in Jesus Christ, their sins will be forgiven, they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. But what is repentance. What does it mean to repent? I've used this example before, I'll use it again. Repent literally means to turn around, to change your mind, to go in a different direction. It's the idea of walking this way and stopping and turning around and walking this way. The Westminster Shorter Catechism defindes repentance, Christian repentance, repentance onto life. Is this? Repentance onto life is a saving grace where by a sinner, out of a true sense of his sin and appreciation of the mercy of God in Christ does, with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it unto God, with full purpose of and endeavor after new obedience. In other words, Christian repentance is this. Imagine sin over here, imagine God over here, and it is going this way and turning around and going this way. That's Christian repentance, turning from your sin to Christ. And probably there is no chapter, or very few chapters in the Bible that would illustrate this better than Psalm fifty one. And so we want to look at Psalm fifty one this morning to see what it looks like to repent, what true repentance looks like. Now, as you read through the book of so Ms, what...

...you will realize is that some of the psalms have titles, not all of them, but some of them do. In these titles will give you some extra, added things that you may need to know. So, for instance, it might tell you who wrote the Psalm, it may give some liturgical instructions for the choir master of those that might be performing the song, or whatever it may be, and in some, not all, will give you the situation that inspired the Psalm. Psalm fifty one does that. Look at the title. To the choir master, a Psalm of David. David wrote this song. The Great Ting of Israel, the greatest King of Israel, wrote this Psalm when Nathan the prophet went to him after he had gone in to bast Shiba. The great revered King of Israel wrote this ad in the midst of his greatest failure. You remember this? Let me remind you. And Second Samuel, Chapter Eleven. It tells of this great failure. Is David, the Great King of Israel. This is the height of the DEVIDIC monarchy, the height of the Kingdom of Israel. His troops are out, they are battling the amor rights led by Joe AB. David's back home. He gets up from a from from from an evening now or an afternoon nap, and he looks and he sees a young lady bathing on top of her roof, cleansing herself, purifying herself, and he is intrigued. She's beautiful, she's lovely, she's naked and lust begins to build in David and he asked the question, who is that? And they say that's that's best she, but that's the wife of your your servant, you're Ayah, the hit tight, one of your one of your friends, one of your greatest soldiers, one of the thirty, one of one of your greatest companions, one of your most faithful and loyal soldiers. That's who she is. And in verse four of Second Samuel, Chapter Eleven, it says so David Sent Messengers and took her. She came to him and he lay with her. There's a lot of discussion about this particular verse and the Copability of Bathsheba in this or not, but let's let's let's let's really be real here. This is an abuse of power, this is sexual abuse, regardless of what is going on this could be rape. This is a man who is the king. You don't say no to the king, and this is a man who has great power, the greatest power in Israel, and he is using that power to get what he wants and not think of anyone else but himself in this moment. Then Bathsheba comes to him and says I'm pregnant. Now what does he do? So he had to a plan. I'm going to bring Your Ryan wing to bring the husband back and maybe he'll go spend some time with his wife. And then it's like, oh, Hey, congratulations, you're having a baby, but you're Riah is faithful. He's faithful to his troops. He says, my troops are out outside, they're sleeping on the ground. I'm not going to go in and and sleep in a soft bed beside my wife when that's happening. And so he sleeps outside. David thinks, well, hey, maybe I'll get him drunk and maybe then that'll take down his inhibitions. Dope, still sleeping outside. So He sends him back with a note to Joe AB. When he gets there, Joe ABB put him on the front line and then step back. Joe Abb Takes Your Ayah puts him on the front line. That'll text doesn't indicate he actually steps back, but regardless, you're Riah dies and David's response, this is this is the ED paraphrase. His response is something like well, things happen, don't worry about it, keep fighting. Then he burries Best Sheba. Now what you...

...have to understand is at this moment David would have been viewed this would have been viewed as an honorable thing. You see, you're living in a time where here, if a woman does not have a father or a husband and doesn't have any of that to to care for her and take care of her, she has the possibility of becoming destitute and and and being poor and and even die, even death and dying. And so that's why you see many times in the Old Testament you would see right brothers or other people in the family, these kinsman's redeemers that would take them in to care for them and take care of them. It seems odd to us today, but that was the culture back then. You See, David stepped into be the redeemer. He stepped in to take her into his home to care for her. Maybe your eye of the hit tight being a hit tight, didn't have next of kin, but he was a friend of the king and the King took her in. In other words, people would have said, my, how holy he is, my how wonderful it is that he has done this thing. David looks like he's about to get off Scott free and smelling like roses. But there is a sovereign that is over David, and that sovereign is not one you tell. No, that is the one that can tell. David, knowing that sovereign is not happy. And so he comes to Nathan the Prophet, and Nathan the Prophet Goes to David and tells him a story. It's worth Reading Second Samuel Chapter Twelve. Feel free to turn there if you'd like. Second Samuel Chapter Twelve, starting in verse one. The Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to me and said now there were two men in a certain city, one rich, in the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds, but the poor man had nothing but one little EU lamb which he had bought. He brought it up and it grew up with him and with his children. He it used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or heard and prepare for the great guests who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him. Listen to David's reaction in verse five. Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man and he said to Nathan, as the Lord Lives, this man who has done this deserves to die and he shall restore the lamb four fall, because he did this thing and be came and because he had no pity. And then Nathan says for words that absolutely destroy David. Nathan looks him in the eye and says, you are the man. David was participating in sinfulness, he was perpetuating evil. He probably, like us, in the midst of perpetuating that evil, has all kinds of excuses and all kinds of things so that he doesn't recognize how evil the evil is. But in this moment, through the Prophet Nathan, God takes away the scales from his eyes and he is faced with evil that he cannot run away from, he cannot ignore, and that evil is not found outside of David. That eveless found within David. He's broken. Look at his response. In verse thirteen. David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. Nathan said to David, the Lord also has put away your sin. You shall not die. That is shocking. David, the King of Israel, the one who is in charge of all things in Israel, has more power than anyone else in...

Israel, has committed murder, abuse, maybe even rape. Hayna, sins that just piled on top of each other and with six words, I ascended against the Lord, all of a sudden he gets off without dying. What is going on here? How can this be? I think Psalm fifty one shows us how this can be, how God can forgive David of this sin. And let me tell you, it may be shocking, but it is good news, because if David Sins can be forgiven, so can ours. If David Sins can be washed away, soaking yours. If David Sins can be blotted out, so can mine. This is good news. So let's see what has taken place so that David might be forgiven psalm fifty one. But we will see in Psalm fifty one is David's Penance, David's turning, and there are four turnings that will see in this passage, Lord Willing. One thing we will see is we will see David turning from himself, David turning from himself, we will see David turning from his sin, turning from his sin, and we will see him turning to God, turning to God, but also turning to others. So turning from himself, turning from his sin, turning to God and turning to others. Let's begin by looking at David turning away from himself. Look at the first verse of Psalm Fifty One. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love, according to your abundant mercy. The word mercy is used twice in this verse. This word mercy means to to pity, to favor, to have compassion, to incline favorably towards and the sense is not that you are having compassion on somebody who deserves compassion. The idea is as you're finding favor in someone that you should not find favorable. As the idea here to understand where his mind is. Look at verse for to understand what He's thinking. Look at what he says in Verse Four, against you, you only. Have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgments. Now this is one of those verses that you go what, what do you mean? You sinned against God, and God only. There's not anyone in the story that David hasn't sinned against. He's ending against Bathsheba. He sinned against his own family, his own wives. He sinned against Riah. He send against a nation of Israel. He's sending it. There's no one he hasn't sinned against. What are you talking about? But David is realizing you're what he's using, in a poetic way of talking about is the simple truth that all sin is sin because it is ultimately against God. Are You with me? That's what separates a sin from a mistake. I can make a mistake on a math problem, on a test. That's not necessarily sinful, some mistake. But if God, who is the one who is ultimately faithful and he wants us to be ultimately faithful, as he is ultimately faithful, especially to the relationships we are in, and he gives a rule to help us to be ultimately faithful to the most precious relationship that we have, our spouse. And he comes and says, don't commit adultery so that you will be faithful. And if we choose in that moment to commit adultery, that is a sin because it is an affront against the holiness of God. Yes, you are sitting against your spouse, yes, you are sitting against the person that you're cheating with. Yes, you're sitting against a multitude of people, but ultimately what makes it sin is it is a sin against God. It is offending God, he...

...is going against God's character, and so, ultimately, God is the ultimate person you are sending against you with me to makes sense, and since he is the sovereign, since he is just, since he is the perfect and righteous one, that when he judges our sin against him, that judgment is right and it is blameless, and that judgment, David spoken from his own mouth. That judgment for that kind of sin, for any sin, is death, not just physical death, but eternal death. It is death. Here is what David realizes. He has no leg to stand on. He is guilty, he is vile. God has no reason to show him mercy. All he can do is fall at the feed of the Great God of the Universe and Beg for mercy, beg for him to look his way in favor. But notice what the basis is of that favor. According to your abundant love or your steadfast love. He doesn't come and say, God, show me mercy because of all the things I've done for you, look at how I've loved you, show me mercy. Based on that, he's none nough. He says according to your steadfast love. This is the Hebrew word hast to. We've about this quite a bit. The Hebrew word hested is not talking about, you know, love that comes and goes. It's talking about Covenant Love, Love that stays. This is immovable. Of Our love for God is movable. That's what sin is. When you sin, you are saying I am choosing at this moment to love something more than God, and more than likely that is usually yourself. Our love is movable, or we wouldn't sin. But God's love is not. He has chosen to love us, not because we are loved Babble, but in spite of our unloveliness. David realizes that. He says, God, you have made a covenant with Abraham, you have come to Moses and revealed to him, and ext just thirty four, that you are the Lord, Merciful and Gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. Lord, you have chosen to set your affection on us. You have chosen to set your affection on me, Lord, in your abundant love, in your steadfast love. Because of that, show me mercy. That's all he has to call out to, because that is rock solid. He turns from himself and turns only to God. Then we see him begin to turn from his sin. Look at what he continued. Used to say in Verse One, Blot Out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, cleanse me from my sin, for I know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me. And if you go down to verse five, he says this. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me? He's not saying that there was some kind of sin that his mom did that caused him to be conceived. That's not what he's saying. Here's basically what he's saying. Remember, God over here, Sin over here. What he's saying is when we're born, we're not born neutral. We're born pointing that way, broken or sinful. We're we're tainted, we're every part of us is broken and our natural inclination, our natural lean is this way, and so when we actually begin to think and walk and talk and do things, our natural inclination is to...

...go that way. That's what he's saying. From birth, from conception, he has been broken and sinful. His natural inclination is sin and that sin is ever before him, that transgression is ever before him. There are three words he uses here to talk about sin. He uses the word transgression, which means which means to break a relationship, it means to it means rebellion. It's the idea of you see something, you see what it says and you do the opposite, you do what's wrong. The other is iniquity. This is the idea of something that is twisted, something that is not straight. It's crooked, it's twisted, it's marred. And then he uses the word sin. And you probably heard before that the word sin means to miss the mark. Okay, sometimes we might think of this as a little bit like an archer. Okay, like say there's a bulls eye over there, big bulls eye, and somebody gets his Arrow at he's going to go, you know, the bull's I and we kind of think of missing the mark. Might be like, you know, here's the bulls eye and I hit here or I hit it over here. That's not the sense of the word. This is the sense of the word. It's like one of those old cartoons that they pull the bowl like this and they let it go in. The bow falls right there in the Arrow stands right here and falls down. That's how much we miss the mark. It never even gets close. That's what he's saying. My my sin, my iniquity, my transgressions are ever before me and there's nothing I can do about it. There's a great scene in the tragedy of Macbeth, Scene Five, act five, scene one, or something like that, where Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have already killed King Duncan, spoiler alert, and and she is she's sleepwalking, and I won't quote the line because it could be offensive to some, so I don't want to do that. But basically she's imagining the blood on her hands and she's washed the blood off of her hand but there are some spots left and she can't get them off and she begins to curse the spots because there's nothing she can do, no matter, no matter of the soapno amount of scrubbing, nothing she can do. These these spots, will not go away. That's the idea here. His sin is ever before him. There's nothing he can do to take it away. The only thing he can do is bag that someone who can take it away would please take it away, and that's what he does. Blot out my transgressions, wash me, cleanse me. The word Blot here is the same word is used in genesis to describe God's wrath upon humanity at the time of Noah. He blotted them out, he annihilated them, he obliterated them. What you see here is what's called synonymous parallels, parallelism. It's a it's a poetic way of emphasizing what he is desiring, what he is wanting, because he says the same thing over and over again with different lingo. Here's what he's ultimately saying, God, my sin is ever before me, I cannot do anything about it. Please annihilate my sin, but find a way to annihilate it without annihilating me. Rescue me like Noah, but annihilate my sinfulness. That's what he's begging for. He's broken for his sin. He desires for his sin to be taken away. He's turning from it. But when you turn from something you have to turn to something right, and so he's turned from self, he's turned from sin and now he's turning to God. The third point. It's turning to God. It's imagine if you have a quarter. A quarter has to have heads and tails for it to be spendable. For to be an actual quarter, you might have a two sided quarter, you know, same side a quarter, a double has double tails. That might allow you to trick some people, which can't spend it. You can't do anything with it. It's not an actual quarter. An order, an order for quarter to be a quartered has to have both heads and tails. John Piper describes repentance a little bit like...

...a coin. There's tails, so you turn tail and run from sin, and then there's heads. You head straight for Jesus. If both don't happen, you don't have repentance. You don't have real repentance. Think of think of my illustration earlier. We're born pointing this way and we're going this way now. That doesn't mean that there are times where we might glance back. Maybe that's a prayer every now and then, attending church every now and then. Maybe that's feeling guilty for something, or maybe that's getting caught in our sin and in that moment we want to make everything right. We feel terrible about what we've done. Actually, we probably feel more terrible about getting caught than what we've done. So we do everything to to you know, to try to make it right. But then, after it's over worth, after the dust settles, the trajectory of our life, even though we look back every now and then, the trajectory of our life are lean. Contends to be that, contends to be that way. Be with me. That's not repentance. Real repentance is a complete turn around to where you're facing this way, to where the lean of your life is towards God, Towards Holiness, towards Christ. You may glance back over here occasion. You may fall, you may fault. You may sin, you may do things that are not right. Absolutely, that happens. It's happened to all of us this morning. But if, but, but, true repentance means that the totality of life is leaning towards Christ, not leaning towards sin. Are You with me? That's true repentance. If you are always leaning this way and you're never turning to Christ, that's not repentance. If you're always turning to Christ but you never repenting, that's not true repentancy. The true repentance they turn from sin to Christ. That's what real repentance is. He recognizes, David recognizes it is not just repentance, is not just about not sinning. It is about actually doing the things that God has called and wants him to do. And he also recognizes that, just like the sin on his hands that he can't take away, he also can't ultimately cause himself to walk in obedience to Christ, a rock and obedience to God. So he cries out his Christ become different. He goes from saying in verse nine, Hide Your Face from my sins and blot out my transgressions to verse ten, create in me a clean heart, O God, renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of her salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. You hear what he's saying. I can't wash the sin off my hands, but I can't cause my heart to be alive. I can't cause my spirit to be willing. Lord, you must do that there. It must be something that has to happen inside of us, miraculously, by the power of God, to cause me to want to lean that way. God, please do that. Don't just take away my sins, but cause me to lean towards you. That's what he's saying. Look what he says in Verse Sixteen. For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it. You will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contried heard. Oh God, you will not despise hear what he's saying. I'm going to make a sacrifice. Remember, God had provided sacrifices. Right, these are the sacrifices for you to believe into. Trust in those sacrifices. Ultimate pointed to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. Believe and trust in these things. Trust in him, he said. I can make a sacrifice, but that's not going to do any good if I'm trusting in the dead cow or the dead lamb. That sacrifice only works if I am broken and contrite in spirit, broken and contrade and heart another wors if I am trusting in the God who has provided the sacrifice, who has given the sacrifice. And he's begging Lord I I want to just...

...do things, because it is not the doing of the things that causes me to be redeemed. What it causes me to readeep be redeemed is the God who has given me this. So I bow before you, I am broken before you. I want to be want to be transformed inside. I want to have a clean heart. I want to have the Holy Spirit, feel it, help me and give me a willing spirits so that I might go that way. Do you see what he's saying? He's begging him cause me to be humble before you, test faith in you and to have faith in the sacrifice that you have provided. In other words, really what he is calling him to do, what he's begging him to do is to restore the joy of this salvation. Think about this. David, like us, didn't deserve salvation. Everybody in this room, whether we recognize it or not, are evil. We are perpetuating evil. We have at some point in our life promoted evil. We are all to have been going this way and baby, we don't know how evil the evil is that we've been perpetuating. But there's a grace that happens when God sends someone to share the Gospel with us and take the scales off of our eyes so that we see that evil for what it is. We see it before our eyes, we see that it is complete evil and that the evil is not out there. The evil is in here. That we bring the problem, not the solution. We're broken and then we hear someone say, but salvation is available. God has provided away, God has provided a sacrifice, God has provided something to take your place so that you might be rescued. And so, by God's grace, we turn as David turned. We believe we are contracte, we bow down, we give our lives to him, we give our lives to God and we trust in the sacrifice that he has provided and in that moment we have joy because we are rescued. We are saved. The Bible tells us there's no condemnation. Our Sins, past, present, future, gone. There is joy in the acceptance we have that there is a god who loves us so much he would send his son to crushed so that we might be saved. There is joy evermore. And when we sin, what we are did simply doing, is we are trading that joy for something lesser. We're trading that joy for a joy that is less than that. C S Lewis has said. We are half hearted creatures fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joys offered us. Like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea, we are far too easy till he pleased. When we lose the joy of the salvation that God has given us, we place our joy in something that is so much lesser than him. That's what sin is. That's what has happened here to David. That's what's happened probably to us this week. Our love has been moved to something lesser, and God what he is saying here is bridge. Restore to me that joy of that salvation, so that when I am tempted, I will see that there is ultimate joy in Christ and it Pales. Everything that comes close to it Pales. There's nothing that will give you more joy that Jesus, so that when that next temptation comes, you say no, I don't need that. I have ultimate joy because I have Christ. Are You with me? Restore to me the joy of my salvation, because when that joy is there it will spill over into everything that we do. We will be coming...

...towards God, yes, but also we will not just turn to God, but the outcropping of that is we will actually begin to turn to other people. Look at what he says in verse thirteen. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, sinners will return to you. Deliver me from blood, guiltliness. Oh God, Oh God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. Whole Lord, open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise. When God does this in our life, when he moves us by his spirit, when he moves us by the power inside of of our hearts, through the spirit towards him and that joy is restored. What we will do as we will sing, we will shout, we will sing of the glories of God and we simply can't keep it inside. And not only will we sing it here, not only will we tell our families about it, but as we live, it will spill out of who we are. Mean that we will help people, we will love people, we will want to see people taking care of we want to take care of all of the the hurt in the world. We will want to take care of all of those things, especially eternal suffering, so that as we help people in their suffering state, we will tell them that the ultimate joy, the ultimate salvation that they could have is in Jesus Christ, and we will share with them that there is a joy, that there is a hope, that that they repent like we have repented, God will rescue them. That's why we do missions, so that joy will be made known, so that other people will have the same joy, ultimate joy. That's why Christ Michelle do what they do. That's why the forest family does what they do. That's why in a little bit we're going to hear a young person in our congregation that is going to do that this summer and here the joy that is there. We do this, we share, we do missions because we want to see people have ultimate joy and we want to see God glorified that that ultimate joy will fill their lives. Amen. That's what we want to see. We want to see people saved and have that same joy. We are beggars. We want to see other beggars taste the bread of life. That is repentance, I guess still one of the most notorious political scandals of our time is Watergate, and in the Watergate scandal there was a man who was part of it, kind of on the fringe, is part of the reelection campaign of President Nixon, who was just, if you think of a like stereotypical lawyers and stereotist, typical like politicians and and political you know, the people that kind of lie all the time and don't cut care who they step on, and that those selfrighteous folks who just want to to get what they want and they don't care who they hurt. That was this guy. He was special counsel to Nixon, he was part of his campaign. He came up with a lot of dirty tricks and tore other people down and told lies about all kinds of things and he was actually referred to as Nixon's hatchet man. Is Not guy by the name of Chuck Colson. When water gate Bro and things were just falling apart, his whole life is falling apart, he didn't know what to do, and so he he remembered a meeting he had a few months earlier with a head of the company called Raytheon. He was going to be their lawyer once again. He had been their lawyer in the past. His friends with the CEO. It's mad him in thought something's different about you, something's something's what is it? What's going on? How are you the...

...way you are? And the guy said, well, I gave my life to Christ, I gave my life to Jesus Christ and he's changed me. As water gate began to get worse, he called his friend and said can I come talk to you? He went over to his house, he said, in his car in the driveway, and this man began to share with him the saving message of Jesus Christ. He began to read to him some passages from C S Lewis Book Mere Christianity, and Colson says that when he left that night, something happened. That had never happened to him before. He was getting into his car. He sat there and he couldn't drive because he was crying too hard. He's been an hour on the side of the road, right next to his friend's house, crying, thinking about my wife, he says, wanting to know God, wanting to be clean. They couldn't drive. He said. I was an ex marine captain the White House, tough guy. I was crying too hard, calling out to God. I didn't know what to say. I just knew I needed Jesus and he came into my life that night. See he he was involved in evil, he was perpetuating evil, as all of us are, and in that moment God took away the scales from his eyes so that he might see the evil that he was perpetuating and see the the forgiveness that is there through Jesus Christ. And in that moment he knew I need that. I got nothing else. I can't wipe away this scene, I can't take this away. I don't deserve favor. Lord Be Merciful to me, a sinner. Coulson went on to admit what he did, pled guilty to instructs of justice spent seven months in prison and in those seven months God gave him a calling and he spent the rest of his life pouring out his heart and lives for prisoners, for those who know that they are transgressors, so that they might know the life saving joy that is in Christ. There is an interesting thing here in verse seven. Perge me with his soup and I shall be cleaned, wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Hiss up was a plant had kind of Harry endings, could kind of bunch of together and it would form kind of like a paintbrush and it would be used to DAB into water, in blood for purification ceremonies, especially where lepers were concerned. The probably one of the most significant times that hiss up was ever used was in the time of slavery, when the Angel of death was going to come through. God provided a sacrifice so that the angel of death would not take the firstborn of the Jews, and so they killed a lamb, they held its blood, they dipped it, the hiss up in it and put it over their doorposts so that the angel of death would pass over, so that they would be rescued. Brothers and sisters my question to you this morning is where are you leaning? Is Your Life Lean towards sin, or is your life leaning towards God? Reality is, all of us are sinners. All of us have not done what we should do. All of us deserve for the angel of Death to take us. But God has provided a sacrifice. Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, has shed his blood and if you will repent of your sin and trust in him this morning, then you will be covered by his blood and when that happens, you will be made whiter than snow. Only Christ can make us whiter than snow. Are you leaning towards sin this...

...morning? Turn around, by God's grace, turn around and head towards God so that he might save you. Are you leaning towards God this morning? The entirety of the Christian life is a repent life, of repentance and faith. I know at some point you're looking back. Turn to him, trust in him. Jesus Christ is the only one that can make us white as snow. Let's pray God. We thank you. Thank you, God, that you have soft fit to love us, to rescue us, to come to our aid. You have soft fit to love us with an incalculable love, love that we can't even understand, a steadfast love of love that would say I will send my son to die in your place. Lord, this morning help us all, no matter where we are, to trust in you, to believe in you, to give our lives to you this morning so that we might know the joy of being washed clean by the blood of Jesus Christ. We ask this in your glorious name. Amen.
